AI Overviews and Zero-Click Search: The SEO Response Strategy

Google's AI Overviews answer questions directly in search results. Click-through rates on informational queries are dropping. Here's how to adapt your SEO strategy to still win traffic.

Published on February 12, 2026

Google's AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) synthesize answers from multiple sources and display them above organic results. For informational queries (the bulk of top-of-funnel SEO content), this means users can get a complete answer without clicking any result. Early data suggests CTR on informational queries has dropped 30–60% on keywords where AI Overviews appear. This isn't the death of SEO. It's a fundamental shift in which queries produce traffic and which produce only brand impressions.

Which queries are most affected by AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear most frequently on informational queries (how to, what is, why does, explain) and less frequently on commercial or transactional queries (best X for Y, buy X, X pricing, X vs Y). Product comparison, pricing, and vendor-selection queries still generate clicks because AI Overviews don't resolve purchase decisions. Users still want to visit the site, read reviews, and make a considered choice. Local queries and queries with freshness requirements (news, recent events, current data) also continue to generate clicks. Your SEO strategy needs to shift emphasis toward these query types and reduce investment in pure informational content that AI Overviews now handle completely.

How to appear inside AI Overviews

  • Structure content with clear, direct answers to specific questions. AI Overview sources tend to be pages that answer the question concisely in the first paragraph, not pages that bury the answer
  • Use FAQ schema and HowTo schema. Google's AI systems parse structured content reliably
  • Publish original research, data, and proprietary perspectives. AI Overviews frequently cite unique data points that synthesized AI content can't replicate
  • Build E-E-A-T signals: author credentials, citations, links from authoritative domains. Google weights experience and expertise heavily for AI Overview sourcing
  • Optimize for conversational, question-format headings that match how users phrase queries to an AI system

How to shift SEO investment toward queries that still generate clicks

Audit your organic traffic by query type. In Google Search Console, filter pages by query intent; separate informational (how/what/why) from commercial (best/vs/review/price) queries. For pages where impressions are high but CTR has declined sharply in the past six months, AI Overviews are likely taking the answer. These pages still have brand value (getting cited in an AI Overview is a form of impressions), but they're not reliable traffic drivers. Reinvest content effort into commercial comparison content, category pages with genuine depth, and bottom-of-funnel content that helps users make purchasing decisions. These queries produce clicks that AI Overviews don't eliminate.
